Of course no body likes to see their dog getting a correction, but what we understand it is necessary to keep the dog safe in their dog fence. But how do we minimize the discomfort for the dog while still teaching them that they cannot stray outside the safe zone.

The first thing to do, is to make sure you did all the exercises leading up to the correction. These exercises help teach your dog the importance of retreating when they hear the beep. This helps them once they get the correction because they understand why it happened and how to avoid it in the future. This preliminary work really speeds up the dog fence training and minimizes the amount of corrections the dog gets.

It is important to remember that the correction is a lot like a static shock, it is very brief and unexpected. It does not hurt so much as it is completely suprising to your dog and that is what makes them react. So your dog after the correction is in a state of suprise (not pain).

In this circumstance the worst thing you can do is comfort the dog. This makes the dog think you are scared and in turn makes them think they have a reason to be scared. The best thing to do is to exercise leadership. Carry on like normal and confidently continue playing with your dog. This will help the dog understand that they do not need to be generally fearful, that the safe zone is still a fun place, only that they cannot stray outside it.

If the boundary wire gets cut, repair is pretty simple. All you need to do is get the two ends of the wire (on either side fo the ct, strip off a bit of insualtion from each wire. Then use a waterproof wire nut to reconnect the wire.

Be sure to use a waterproof wire nut, they have a special gell in them that keeps out the water and protects the exposed wire from the elements. You can get them at most hardware stores.

First, only leave dogs older than six months and in good health outside unsupervised in the peak of the summer. Puppies and infirm dogs just aren’t as good at regulating their temperature and need a little extra help to stay cool.

Second, make sure your dogs have access to plenty of drinking water within the boundaries of the dog fence. A medium size dog can easily go through a gallon of water in the summer so make sure there is a generous supply of drinking water on hand. And be sure to keep the water in the shade.

Third, make sure there are some good shady spots within the boundary at all times of the day, particularly during the midday when the sun is overhead and at it’s most powerful. If there isn’t a shady spot it is a good idea to make a covering he can get under. Just make sure your choice of covering is something that doesn’t draw the heat, but reflects it away. A white canvas sheet strung between some trees will do the trick.

Fourth, if possible keep a source of cooling within the dog fence boundaries. A kiddy pool or mister is ideal. Your dogs can happily splash about keeping cool while you are away. Just move the pool every day to stop muddy patches forming in your back yard.
